Fixing Sink Holes in Your Candles
Fixing Sink Holes in Your Candles
There's nothing quite as disappointing as lighting a candle and noticing a sink hole forming in the center. Sink holes occur when the wax around the wick melts faster than the rest of the candle, leaving a depression. Not only do they affect the appearance of the candle, but they also reduce its burning time. Luckily, there are a few simple techniques you can use to fix sink holes and ensure your candles burn evenly.
1. Fill the Sink Hole
One of the easiest ways to fix a sink hole is to fill it in. You can do this by melting some leftover candle wax and pouring it into the depression. Make sure the wax is at the same temperature as the candle to avoid any cracking or separation. Allow the wax to cool and solidify before lighting the candle again.
2. Use a Heat Gun
If you don't have any extra wax on hand, you can try using a heat gun to fix the sink hole. Gently warm the surrounding wax with the heat gun, being careful not to overheat or melt the entire candle. As the wax softens, it will naturally fill in the depression. Once the surface is smooth, let the candle cool down before relighting it.
3. Trim the Wick
In some cases, sink holes may occur due to an oversized wick. Trimming the wick to the appropriate length can help prevent sink holes from forming. Use a pair of scissors or a wick trimmer to trim the wick to about 1/4 inch above the wax surface. This will promote proper burning and reduce the likelihood of sink holes.
4. Burn Candles Properly
Prevention is always better than cure. To avoid sink holes in the first place, it's essential to burn candles properly. Ensure that the first burn is long enough to allow the entire top layer to melt. This will help the candle establish an even burn pool from the beginning. Additionally, always trim the wick before each use and keep the candle away from drafts or uneven surfaces.
By following these simple steps, you can easily fix sink holes in your candles and enjoy their warm glow for longer. Remember to exercise caution when working with heat and hot wax to ensure your safety. Now you can confidently light your candles knowing they will burn evenly and beautifully.
